No, this NFL player didn’t burn a U.S. flag in the locker room

Why Google’s Project Loon can’t help fix the internet in Puerto Rico

By Thursday, September 28, 2017 0 Permalink 0

Hurricane Maria demolished Puerto Rico’s brittle electrical grid in one slash across the island. In doing so, it also took the broadband infrastructure with it. A fix could soon be high-altitude concepts for beaming internet to disaster-stricken areas from the sky, but innovations like that (such as Google’s Project Loon) are still in their R&D phase, and not yet ready to be deployed.

For the uninitiated, Project Loon involves balloons that sail through brisk winds at some 65,000 feet of altitude. Dangling from these balloons are receivers that are capable of streaming internet to and from phones on the ground below. Read more…

Facebook is trying to match blood donors with those who need it

By Thursday, September 28, 2017 0 Permalink 0

Facebook is rolling out a new feature to help blood donors, and the people who need it in India find each other.

On Oct. 1, India’s National Blood Donor Day, Facebook will start prompting users to sign up as blood donors. People will see the prompt in their timelines, and can tag themselves as donors in their profiles, and choose to share this with friends.

Zuckerberg’s non-statement on Trump and fake news is a total cop out

By Wednesday, September 27, 2017 0 Permalink 0

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg issued a statement Wednesday addressing President Donald Trump, fake news, and his company’s controversial role in the 2016 presidential election. And, perhaps unsurprisingly coming from a man whose idea of connecting with reality is a carefully managed 50-state photo op, his words were polished to the point of meaninglessness. ;

Zuck was responding to a rambling presidential tweet that both maligned the social network-turned-advertising company and insisted it’s “anti-Trump.” Possibly sensing an opportunity to garner some public goodwill, the best dressed man in Silicon Valley assured his 96 million followers that, nah, he’s doing his very best to be fair and balanced. And that he’s trying. Like, really hard. ; Read more…

By Wednesday, September 27, 2017 0 Permalink 0

Hey Mark Zuckerberg, the Senate is calling.

The Senate Intelligence Committee invited Facebook to testify in an open hearing about how foreign actors (cough, Russia, cough) may have leveraged the social network to influence the 2016 presidential election, The Hill reported Wednesday. ;

The committee set the hearing for November 1. They also invited Google, Politico reported earlier Wednesday. Twitter received an invitation as well, according to The Hill. ;

These requests come more than a month after Facebook revealed Russia-linked accounts spent more than $100,000 on about 3,000 political ads during the 2016 election. Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat and vice chair in the committee, has been calling for a public hearing since that admission. Now, the invitations have been sent. ; Read more…
